Grupo Capoeira Angola Pelorinho

From CapoeiraWiki

Grupo de Capoeira Angola Pelourinho (GCAP) is one of the most significant and influential organizations dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Capoeira Angola, the traditional form of capoeira that emphasizes the cultural, ritualistic, and philosophical aspects inherited from African traditions. Founded in 1980 in Rio de Janeiro by Mestre Moraes, the group has played a pivotal role in the revival and dissemination of Capoeira Angola both within Brazil and internationally.

History

GCAP was established in 1980 in Rio de Janeiro by Mestre Moraes, a prominent figure in the capoeira community known for his deep commitment to maintaining the traditional elements of Capoeira Angola. In 1982, Mestre Moraes returned to Bahia, the cradle of capoeira, where he established the group's headquarters in Salvador. The move to Bahia, a region rich in Afro-Brazilian culture and history, allowed GCAP to immerse itself fully in the roots of Capoeira Angola and to contribute to the cultural landscape of Salvador.

Mission and Objectives

The fundamental objective of GCAP is to preserve the traditional elements that define Capoeira Angola. This includes a focus on the ritualistic and philosophical dimensions of the art, which are often overshadowed by the martial and commercial aspects in other styles of capoeira. For GCAP, capoeira is not merely a martial art; it is a cultural practice that encompasses a wide array of forms and expressions, each with its own historical significance and value.

GCAP advocates for capoeira as a tool for social, political, and cultural consciousness. Rather than emphasizing physical confrontation, the group is committed to educating its members and the broader community about the importance of rights, citizenship, and the fight against social exclusion. GCAP's inclusive approach welcomes participants of all backgrounds, regardless of gender, race, religion, political ideology, or social class.

Activities and Research

Beyond being a training center for practitioners of Capoeira Angola, GCAP also functions as a research center. The organization is involved in the study and documentation of capoeira, Afro-Brazilian music, and black culture, as well as issues related to citizenship, childhood, and adolescence. GCAP maintains a collection of written and audiovisual documentation on these subjects and places significant emphasis on the formal education of its members, actively facilitating their access to educational opportunities.
